With a strong developer community of over 230,000 developers, ARM® mbed™ offers a cutting edge IoT operating system, plus the tools and cloud services to make IoT solutions possible combined. The ARM mbed IoT Device Platform, a solution featured on the HWTrek platform, includes the mbed Developer Community, mbed OS, mbed Cloud, mbed Device Server, mbed Device Connector Service, mbed TLS, and mbed Client. A few years back I met David Pan at a startup event. Fast forward a couple years, I reconnected with him at ARM to learn more about IoT device development using ARM mbed.
Please introduce yourself.
My name is David Pan and I am the Director of Marketing – Internet of Things business unit, Asia at ARM. My team focuses on identifying and leveraging marketing opportunities to spread awareness about ARM mbed IoT Device Platform and align partner co-marketing activities in Asia.
What is the background of ARM mbed; why was it created?
ARM mbed was created to assist developers and OEMs in building and bringing IoT devices to the market faster and allows system integrators and enterprises to deploy scalable, secure IoT solutions. With a global partnership of 65+ partners and 250,000 developers, we are one of the world’s leading IoT solutions today.
At what stage of hardware development should hardware creators use it? Is it usable for those without much experience in electronic engineering and hardware design?
With an agile development framework, an experienced OEM engineering team can leverage mbed to develop scalable IoT products and solutions; while an inexperienced student can also use mbed to prototype simple IoT applications and devices.
What are the benefits of using ARM mbed for the design of IoT devices?
ARM mbed is divided into two product lines: mbed OS and mbed Cloud. ARM mbed OS is an open source operating system that makes the creation and deployment of commercial, standards-based IoT solutions possible at scale. ARM mbed Cloud is an IoT device management SaaS offering that allows secure and reliable connectivity, updating and provisioning of any devices, on any cloud.
For what kind of applications can it be used?
While ARM mbed has been deployed in countless IoT applications, we have seen strong interests in multiple segments such as smart city, smart home, smart agriculture, and smart industrial.
What resources are available for hardware developers using ARM mbed?
Every hardware developer can go to mbed.com and sign up for a free account to access to our online compiler which contains development features such as:
– Reference sample codes,
– HAL to access 100+ development boards and 400+ IoT components,
– Online developer forum to discuss project needs and share ideas,
– Offline IDE and testing tools, and many more helpful features for developers.
How does ARM mbed make it easier to manufacture the final product?
ARM mbed is designed for large scale production because it has strong partnerships with the majority of global silicon vendors that provide cutting edge IoT solutions. ARM’s existing ecosystem has fostered innovation for manufacturability since the origin of ARM. Through the ARM mbed ecosystem, we are also actively working with OEMs/ODMs to make device development much simpler and easier to meet time to market requirements.
What kind of trends within the hardware ecosystem have you seen lately?
We see a trend of needing to resolve security concerns for IoT devices, as developers start to face legal risks for commercialised products. With a chip to cloud product strategy, ARM mbed aims to eliminate security concerns all the way from device to cloud.
Fun question:
What do you recommend (place to go/see, what to eat) for a visitor to Shanghai?
Must see places for the visitor to Shanghai: Must visit the Bund & Tian Zi Fang.
